Can extreme weather conditions have an impact on your windshield?

Heat, Cold, Heavy Winds, Hail

HEAT: In hot weather, the windshield can expand, causing stress on the glass. This can sometimes lead to small cracks and chips that can grow over time. The heat can also cause the adhesive that holds the windshield in place to weaken, which can lead to the windshield becoming dislodged or even falling out.

COLD: In cold weather, your windshield can contract, which can also put stress on your windshield glass. This can result in cracks and chips as well. Many people use hot water to melt the ice or snow on their windshield. This rapid change in temperature can cause your glass to crack.

HAIL: Obviously, hail can cause significant damage to your automobile windows, especially your windshield. Depending on the size of the hailstone, the impact can cause cracks or shattered glass. Extreme or very large hail can cause extensive damage and require the entire windshield to be replaced.

HIGH WINDS: Generally, high winds not an issues but be aware, strong winds can pick up debris and throw it into your windshield, causing chips and cracks.

Always make sure you take precautions in a storm or ahead of a storm. If you are parking your car, try to park in a covered area if at all possible. If you notice any damage to your windshield, give Topeka Auto Glass a call at 785-438-8808
